The United States Nordic Combined ski team finished dead last in the world in 1988. Tom Steitz took over as the coach shortly thereafter
with very little talent or financial sponsorships to work with. But he set a methodical approach to turning the team around, and set
ambitious goals that put it on the path that would lead to later success.
“Just attending an Olympics couldn’t be anyone’s goal,“ Steitz says. ”They had to want a medal, and every athlete had to be improving
whether they were already easily going to make the team or not.”
At the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, the U.S. Nordic ski team ended an 86-year drought during which the United States had
not earned a single medal in the sport. The team, including athletes that Tom had recruited and trained, Bill Demong, Johnny Spillane,
Todd Lodwick and Brett Camerota won one gold medal and two silver medals during the competition.
"Tom Steitz was the guy who built the team we have today," said Demong, now 29. "He also made us buy in to the team
approach, and that has become our motto — that we are a band of brothers that feed off and share each other's successes in

Our Proud Olympic Roots
The Founding Partner of 3 Peaks Leadership, Tom Seitz, coached five Olympic
teams to achieve the highest levels of success the USA had ever seen in two
sports: kayaking and Nordic combined skiing. His success with building a
program that was ultimately prepared to compete at the highest level inspires
what we do every day at 3 Peaks Leadership....here is just part of the story.
